Mission

To conserve and restore America's whitewater rivers and to enhance opportunities to enjoy them safely.

Description

Since 1954, American Whitewater has been a pioneer in the river conservation movement, and today we are the primary advocate for the protection, restoration and enjoyment of our nation's headwaters. Our staff live and work where we have active stewardship projects, meaning they are an integral part of their communities. In the Pacific Northwest, our Seattle-based staff work with our volunteers to protect the region's free flowing rivers, restore flows to rivers impacted by hydropower development, and connect the public to our waterways.

A few of American Whitewater's priorities in the coming year:

  • Conservation of rivers and watersheds of the Olympic Peninsula through the Wild Olympics legislation.

  • Providing a public take-out for boaters on the North Fork Nooksack River.

  • Establishing the state's first Outstanding Resource Waters under the Clean Water Act on the Cascade, Napeequa, and Green Rivers.

  • Advancing land conservation initiatives in the White Salmon, Klickitat, and Little White Salmon watersheds that protect groundwater and summer flows.

  • Removing Enloe Dam on the Similkameen River.

  • Engaging in the Skagit River hydropower licensing process to advance river conservation and recreation interests.

  • Establishing common standards around safety signage along rivers.

The strength of our voice is your support! Thank you!!!!!
