At Amara, we believe in the power of families. That’s why each year we support 3,000+ children, parents, and families in Washington who have experienced the child welfare system.
Founded in 1921, we are a nonprofit organization committed to positive long-term outcomes for children and families. Our mission is to drive systemic change, promote healing, and advance racial and LGBTQIA+ equity, by offering no-cost programs and services to families engaged in foster and kinship care, and services to help prevent system involvement.
We are working with communities to transform the child welfare system into a network of supports that centers family wellbeing. The best way to support children and families is to address the underlying causes of system involvement, including the impacts of racism and poverty, by partnering with people with lived experience to create systemic change.
Support for Families
Family Support Services
Amara’s Family Support Services meet families where they are to help them connect to the resources they need, like childcare and counseling. They also help parents build their support networks.
Programs to Help Prevent the Need for Foster Care
Amara offers several programs through our Family Resource Center in Tacoma that help families stabilize and get the resources they need, such as food, parenting connections, and concrete goods.
Youth Development
We offer a variety of fun and free enrichment opportunities for youth to connect and build community in both Seattle and Tacoma.
Support for Caregivers
Foster Care Program
Amara’s foster care program supports caregivers throughout their entire journey from licensing, to caring for children, to supporting reunification when possible.
Kinship Care Programs
We know that kids do best when they stay connected with family while in foster care. Amara’s Kinship Care programs support families to take care of family with information and connections to resources, managing transitions, becoming licensed, and more.
Caregiver Support Program
Amara provides support to state licensed foster and kinship caregivers and to unlicensed kinship caregivers to help families connect to the resources they need, such as mental health referrals and childcare. Our case workers provide individualized support to caregiver families.
