Our Mission and Vision for the Future

Mission: To empower African Diaspora immigrants, refugees, and their descendants in the Greater Seattle area by advancing health and housing stability through culturally rooted economic development, legal support, resource navigation, education, and access to cultural arts.

Vision: A thriving, informed African immigrant and refugee community actively shaping the well-being of their families, communities, and environment.

 Who is ACHD?

African Community Housing & Development (ACHD) was founded to address displacement, rising housing costs, and limited economic opportunities impacting African Diaspora immigrants and refugees in King County. Led by women of color, ACHD delivers holistic, culturally responsive services, with staff and leadership that reflect the community, 90% BIPOC staff and a fully African Diaspora board.

In 2025, ACHD reached more than 10,000 individuals spanning 76 zip codes across King, Snohomish, and Pierce counties. The people served include youth, families, and elders representing over 39 languages, reflecting the diversity of the communities engaged. 73% are women and children, with households averaging 5-7 members.

ACHD takes a whole-person approach to address root causes of housing instability, poverty, and systemic barriers such as racism, xenophobia, and language access. Services include housing assistance, eviction prevention, food security, advocacy, and economic opportunity programs.

The development of the Cultural Anchor Village is at the heart of ACHD''s community development strategy. The development as planned, encompasses affordable housing, cultural gathering and the delivery of ACHD education programs and services. The project is slated to break ground in SeaTac in the spring of 2027.

Our work is shaped by lived experience. As members of the communities we serve, we bring cultural understanding, language access, and deep expertise to create effective, community-driven solutions.
