Impact Story

When Alex came to the Whatcom Literacy Council, he was at a turning point.

He was training to become a Tribal Police Officer—but writing reports was a challenge that put his future at risk.

After an injury sent him home from training, Alex made a choice: he wasn’t going to give up. He reached out for help.

Through our program, Alex was matched with a volunteer tutor. Together, they worked on the skills he needed to succeed—not just in training, but in his career.

Something else changed, too.

For the first time, Alex began reading to his children—something he had never felt confident enough to do before.

Today, Alex has passed his basic training and is serving his community as a Tribal Police Officer. And at home, he’s sharing books with his kids. That’s the power of literacy.
