Since 1989, First Place has been home to the Doreen Cato Preschool—where the journey begins for our youngest learners and their families.
When you hear “first place,” you might think of trophies or winning a competition. At First Place, it means something far more meaningful. It means every child is surrounded by a strong support system—dedicated teachers, caring staff, and a community that believes in their success.
At First Place School in Seattle, our young scholars know they are valued, seen, and worthy of every investment we make in them. That foundation starts early in the Doreen Cato Preschool, where children are nurtured, encouraged, and prepared to thrive academically and socially.
Our teachers are among the highest rated, and our students are exceeding standards across learning categories. But the true measure of our impact goes beyond academics—our scholars are building confidence, discovering joy in learning, and developing a lasting belief in their own potential.
That’s what “First Place” really means.
And our commitment doesn’t stop at the classroom door. We know that stable housing is essential for a child’s success. That’s why First Place provides transitional and permanent affordable housing for families in Seattle who are at risk of homelessness—currently supporting 28 families with safe, secure places to call home.
At First Place, we’re not just educating children—we’re strengthening families and building a foundation for lifelong success.
Recently, a young mother in our housing program shared:
In 2025, a mother relocated from another state with her three children to escape domestic violence, seeking safety and a fresh start. She was referred to the First Place Family and Housing Program, where our team immediately conducted an assessment to create a personalized action plan. The mother expressed a strong desire to become a truck driver. Inspired by her determination, we provided ongoing support to help her pursue this goal, including in-house rental assistance covering two months’ rent and guidance in applying for additional aid from other agencies.
With the stability of rental assistance, the mother was able to focus on her Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) classes, successfully passing the written test and progressing toward her driving exam. As she continues working toward her CDL, the family is transitioning from a two-year temporary housing program to a permanent home, marking a significant milestone in their journey toward long-term housing stability and financial independence.
“No one has ever believed in me until First Place.
Now, I am almost finished with my education program.
I will be able to support my family in the way I always dreamed of.”
That is what being in “first place” looks like—hope restored, goals within reach, and families moving forward together. With your support, we can do even more.
First Place is more than a blue ribbon. It is a commitment to:
For families at risk of homelessness, your gift changes everything.
Give today—and help every child and family feel what it means to be in First Place. Hope. Home. Education.
