I dropped these high school students off at the Ross Lake trailhead last summer. Most of them didn't know each other. Most had never put on a backpack. None had ever canoed. They were probably thinking "What on earth have I gotten myself into?!?"  

But after their Youth Leadership Adventures trip, I was impressed and amazed to hear how much they each grew. They talked about supporting each other through challenges, having a safe space to talk about climate change and brainstorm solutions in their communities, realizing they each have leadership skills as they practiced being "leaders of the day", learning how to canoe and camp, and falling in love with the amazing North Cascades. They shared about the a night sky bursting with stars, swimming in Ross Lake, making new friends who were like family, and laughing A LOT. 

One student summed it up well: “I am bringing home knowledge and skills in the outdoors, more reformed ideas on climate change, new confidence in myself, and friendships I hope will last a lifetime… also a bit of unwanted dirt.” 

I've seen first-hand how North Cascades Institute programs like this have given space for students to learn, explore, connect, lead, and heal in nature. I care deeply about the future of our beloved planet and know that a gift now—at any level—is a wise investment in the next generation of conservation leaders. So I'm personally willing to match all donations through my fundraiser in addition to the Institute's match!
