This GiveBIG, I’m proud to support Northwest Health Law Advocates (NoHLA).
I’ve been thinking lately about how much access and opportunity shape a life.
Recently, my cousin shared scans of my late grandfather’s records that I had never seen. He served in the Army in the mid '40s, entered Meharry Medical College in 1949, and later became an internal medicine doctor. As a Black man in the American South entering the medical profession in the late 50s/early 60s, his story has had me thinking about what it means to have access to education, training, and opportunity in systems that have never been equally open to everyone.
That is part of why NoHLA’s work resonates with me. NoHLA fights to protect and expand access to affordable, quality health care in Washington because access should not depend on privilege, luck, or who can best navigate a broken system.
In early 2026, NoHLA helped add 6,191 health coverage slots for immigrant Washingtonians, secure $25 million in premium assistance, strengthen oversight of health business mergers, preserve access to therapies for 1 million adults on Apple Health, and defend hospital charity care.
Across the state, these brilliant folks are doing deeply important work to protect access to care and make the health system more fair and accountable.
If you’re able, I hope you’ll join me in supporting NoHLA this GiveBIG.
