Who We Are
SoundBio Lab is a biomakerspace in Seattle's University District. We provide space, tools and community to foster original research projects and develop real-life hands-on lab skills in our community lab space.
What We Do
At SoundBio, we believe biology isn’t just for professionals in lab coats – it’s for everyone. Our lab space supports entrepreneurs, science enthusiasts, citizen science projects, students, and curious community members. Through affordable, hands-on programming, we make bioscience accessible to all ages and backgrounds, sparking curiosity, playfulness, and agency in the sciences.
We provide:
- Space and equipment to conduct independent and community-led research projects
- Hands-on workshops and lab skills training
- Multi-session courses in molecular biology and genetic engineering
- Community science events and open lab nights
- Middle and high school research programs and summer internships
- K-12 outreach programs
Our programming covers everything from painting with bacteria and strawberry DNA extraction to restriction enzyme digests, biomanufacturing, CRISPR, and synthetic biology -- and every topic is open to everyone. Whether you’re brand new to the lab or ready to tackle advanced techniques, you’re welcome to jump in and build hands-on skills. We deliberately keep our fees low and prioritize access for those who have least access to traditional STEM institutions and enrichment opportunities.
What We Need
Our lab is powered by grants, donations, volunteers, and generous contributions of equipment and supplies from our community. Your donation supports:
- Hands-on workshops and courses in our lab
- Expanded fee waivers to ensure cost is never a barrier
- Development of new hands-on programming
- Community-led research and biotech projects
- The staff who run our lab, maintain equipment, and support our programs
- Keeping our space open and accessible to the public
