Community Update – SNAP Funding Crisis and How You Can Help
Friends of the food bank,
Thank you for your showing of tremendous support. With SNAP (food stamp) benefits paused during the federal shutdown, thousands of local families are losing critical food assistance. We expect a 50% increase in visits to our services this week and will be scaling our efforts up rapidly while maintaining current staff levels.
Our team is preparing by:
- Streamlining service so more families can shop efficiently.
- Building pre-packed food boxes for faster distribution.
- Recruiting extra volunteers to manage the surge in demand.
We need your help to meet this challenge:
✅ DONATE FUNDS – In this moment donations are the most impactful and help us purchase the necessary food to manage an unpredictable surge in demand. Your gift helps us purchase groceries right now through this fundraising page.
✅ Donate food – Drop off high-demand staples at 5017 Roosevelt Way like rice, pasta, canned proteins, and peanut butter, diapers, wipes, formula.
✅ Volunteer – Help with distribution, food drives, or box packing. Sign up at udistrictfoodbank.org/volunteer
✅ Fundraise –Rally your network to support families during this gap by setting up your own fundraising page at this Washington Gives site. Contact christine@udistrictfoodbaank.org for additional details.
✅Advocate – Contact your congressional representatives and urge them to fully fund SNAP and WIC.
A recent court ruling requiring the federal government to resume SNAP funding is a hopeful sign — but relief will take time. Your immediate action ensures families don’t go hungry while we wait.
Together, we can bridge this gap and keep our community fed.
Gratefully,
The Staff of University District Food Bank
